West Sussex is a ceremonial county in the South East, bordered by Surrey, East Sussex, the English Channel and Hampshire. It covers 1,991 square kilometres. The South Downs run east to west and split the north from the south: chalk falling sharply into the Weald on one side, a gentler slope to a coastal strip on the other. Crawley is the largest town. Worthing, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton sit on the coast. Chichester, with its cathedral, is the county town in the south-west. Gatwick Airport, inside Crawley’s borders, is a major employer and a reason the north-east of the county behaves like commuter belt.

Sussex was historically one county. From 1888 East and West had separate councils, and in 1974 West Sussex became a single ceremonial county. At the same time a large part of the eastern rape of Lewes, the Mid Sussex district including Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill and East Grinstead, was transferred into West Sussex. That is why older address books still get the county wrong, and why we put it right on every site we build.

Roads and rails follow that geography. The M23 runs to the south of Crawley. The A23 and A24 drop from London toward Brighton and Worthing. The A272 runs east to west through the middle of the county. The A27 does the same nearer the coast. The Brighton Main Line, the Arun Valley line and the West Coastway line carry the rest. Hassocks sits on the Brighton line, which is why we can be in Haywards Heath, Brighton or the south coast without pretending we have an office in each.

For a local business the practical point is this: customers search the town they are in, then “near me”, then maybe the county. We build the town page they will actually land on, keep it fast enough for a phone on the A27, and add the schema and FAQ pairs that Google and AI assistants can quote. If you want the county-wide SEO version, that is a separate, honest piece of work, not a promise that one page will rank for every town from Selsey to East Grinstead.
