Alfriston is one of the prettiest villages in the South Downs, and it earns its living partly from that. Walkers on the South Downs Way, visitors to the National Trust’s Clergy House, and people out for a Sunday lunch all pass through, and they nearly all check online first. Page Forge builds Alfriston businesses a professional website that turns that interest into bookings and calls. Everything included, live in about a week, from £99.

We are based in Hassocks, inland to the west, so Alfriston is a proper drive across the county rather than a local trip. That is fine. We build for Alfriston businesses mostly by phone and video, visiting when it genuinely helps, and most never need us on site. You deal with one person who answers the phone and does the work, wherever we happen to be based.

You do not need to know anything technical. Tell us what you do, and we handle the design, the words, your .co.uk domain, email and hosting, then look after it. We build for independents right across Sussex, from a bakery to an electrician, so we know how to make a small local business look established online.

A Cuckmere valley village built on visitors

Alfriston lies in the valley of the River Cuckmere, about four miles north-east of Seaford and just south of the A27. It is old. It appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Alvricestone, meaning “Aelfric’s settlement”, and there are Neolithic long barrows on the Downs above it. For a village of only a few hundred people, it carries an unusual amount of history.

That history is the draw. The Star Inn began as a religious hostel in 1345, built to house monks and pilgrims travelling between Battle Abbey and the shrine of St Richard at Chichester, and it later became a base for a notorious local smuggling gang whose leader was transported to Australia in 1830. St Andrew’s Church, big enough to be known as the Cathedral of the South Downs, stands on the village green, the Tye, beside the river; the Nobel laureate Sir Peter Medawar and the politician Denis Healey are both buried in its churchyard. And the 14th-century Clergy House was the very first building the National Trust ever bought, back in 1896, a thatched Wealden hall house that still pulls in visitors today.

Add the 15th-century market cross in the square, four old pubs including the Star and the Smugglers’ Inn, and the South Downs Way crossing the Cuckmere here, and you have a village whose businesses live and die by passing trade and by being found before someone arrives. A guest house, a tea room or an inn that does not show up cleanly on a phone search loses that customer to the next one along the valley. That is the gap a good website closes.

The businesses we build for in and around Alfriston are mostly hospitality and independents: inns, tea rooms, guest houses, galleries and small shops, plus the trades and services that keep the valley’s homes running. A clear, quick, well-written site that shows opening times, a menu or a room, and a way to book is worth more here than any amount of clever design nobody reads.

Common questions

Do you build websites for Alfriston businesses from Hassocks?
Yes. Alfriston is a drive across the county from us, so we work mostly by phone and video, visiting when it genuinely helps. Most clients never need us on site, and you still get one person who answers the phone and builds the site.
How much does a website cost in Alfriston?
A standard site is a £99 one-off setup plus £29 a month, or £299 a year paid annually. That covers the website, your .co.uk domain, UK hosting, SSL and six content updates a year. Bigger projects are quoted to match.
How quickly can my Alfriston website go live?
Most sites are live within about five working days. You tell us about your business, we design, write and build the site, and it goes live once you are happy with it.
A lot of my customers are visitors passing through the village. Can the site work for them?
That is exactly what it is for. Walkers on the South Downs Way, National Trust visitors and people out for lunch check their phones before they stop. We build your site so it loads fast and shows the things a visitor needs first: where you are, when you are open, and how to book.
I run a restaurant or an inn with a full menu and rooms. Is a one-page site enough?
Sometimes, sometimes not. A one-page site is perfect for a lot of village businesses, but if you need a full menu, a room-by-room booking system or several pages, we quote that larger build per project rather than forcing everything onto one page. You get the right site for what you actually run.
