Why Is My Wix Site So Slow? Causes and What You Can Do

Wix sites feel slow for a mix of reasons, some you control and some you do not: oversized images, too many apps, heavy animation and video, and the weight of the Wix framework on every page. Fix images and unused apps first. Those are the gains you can actually bank. The builder still adds a baseline you cannot strip, and that ceiling is real.

I will not invent a speed score for your site or anyone else’s. Test it. Then decide if the remaining slowness is something you can live with.

Why does a slow Wix site cost me work?

Visitors leave, faster on a phone on mobile data than on your office wifi. If the first screen takes too long, they tap back. Google uses page experience as one signal among many. A slow page is a handicap, not an automatic penalty. Speed is whether the page is usable.

The general picture is in why is my website slow. This post is Wix-specific. Ruby’s Bakery in Burgess Hill came off a slow Wix site. Sindall in Haywards Heath had a single sluggish Wix page. Oilfire Heating in Uckfield had already burned hours in Wix when he needed to be on boilers. I will not invent how many seconds any of those pages took.

Are my images the main problem?

Often, yes. It is the first thing to fix and the one you can do today.

Photos from a phone or camera are frequently several megabytes. A few full-width originals and the browser is downloading a photo album before it shows your phone number. Wix will resize to a point. It will not save you from six uncropped job photos plus a huge PNG logo plus a gallery that loads everything at once.

Resize to the width you actually display. Compress before upload. Skip decorative stock. Do not use a gallery as a dumping ground. This is usually the single biggest improvement available on Wix. Do it before you buy an app that claims to “optimise speed”.

How much do Wix apps and widgets slow the page?

Each app adds code. Bookings, chat, pop-ups, galleries, third-party cookie banners. Some of that runs on every page. Two useful apps and three forgotten trials is a common stack.

List every app and remove anything you do not use every week. If you cannot answer chat during the day, it is a delayed inbox with extra JavaScript. Drop pop-ups that cover the first screen. You will not get to zero apps. You can get to the ones you can defend.

Do animations and video backgrounds matter?

Yes, especially on older phones and on mid-range Androids, which is a lot of real traffic.

Parallax, sliding heroes and autoplay video look expensive in the preview. They are expensive in the other sense too. Video backgrounds are a frequent reason a good-looking Wix site feels sluggish. A fast first screen (what you do, where, a phone number) beats a cinematic one that arrives late. Turn off video backgrounds. Use one simple transition, or none. Test after each change. I am not against a nice photograph. I am against making the customer wait for a loop they will never watch.

Is the Wix platform itself heavy?

This is the part you do not fully control.

Wix loads its own framework so the editor’s layout can run for visitors. That is the trade for drag-and-drop. Wix has improved this. A tidy Wix site can be usable. A lean, hand-built page still starts with less code.

You cannot uninstall Wix from a Wix site. You can only stop adding weight. If you have compressed images, removed unused apps and dropped the video, and the page still feels slow on a phone, you have likely hit the ceiling. That is the product, not a moral failing.

I will not quote invented Core Web Vitals. Google’s field data for your URL is the only number that matters, and I do not have yours. If a tool shouts a single score, treat it as a hint.

How should I test the speed properly?

Do not guess from your office Mac on wifi. Open the site on your phone, on mobile data. See whether the first screen appears in a couple of seconds and whether you can tap the number. Ask someone else to do the same. You are used to the wait. Then run the address through a free tool or our website speed test and read what it flags, usually images and third-party scripts. If the tool and the phone disagree, trust the phone.

When is it worth leaving Wix for speed?

When you have done the work you control and the page is still a chore to use.

Fix images. Cut apps. Kill the video. Then retest. If it is now fine, stay. There is no prize for migrating a site that already does the job. Moving has a cost and a short risk window for search. Do it for a reason.

Leave when the first screen is still slow after a clean-up, when the editor makes every extra page heavier, or when you are tired of being the person who “just quickly” opens Wix.

A purpose-built site has no Wix runtime on every visit. That is part of the case for a Wix alternative. If you decide to move, do it with redirects, not a panic rebuild. The safe sequence is in moving off Wix. One-pagers with us are £99 to set up and £29 a month, or £299 a year. Multi-page jobs are quoted. I will not promise a lab score. I will promise there is no App Market on the page.

Frequently asked questions

Are Wix sites slower than other websites?

They can be. The builder adds baseline weight, and it is easy to pile on apps, animation and large images. Wix has got faster than it was. A tidy Wix site can be quick enough. A lean purpose-built page still has less overhead to begin with.

How can I speed up my Wix site myself?

Start with images: resize and compress before upload. Remove apps you do not use. Drop video backgrounds and heavy animation. Those three steps are the improvement most owners can make without paying anyone. Then test on a phone on mobile data.

Will Google rank me lower because I use Wix?

Not because of the logo. Google ranks pages. A slow, vague Wix page will lose to a fast, specific custom page. A clear Wix page can rank locally. Speed is one factor. Content, the Business Profile and reviews are usually larger ones.

Will moving off Wix make my site faster?

Often, yes, because a hand-built page does not load a builder on every visit and can be kept thin. How much faster depends on the old site and what you put on the new one. A custom site stuffed with video and trackers can be slow too. Speed is a reason people move. It is not automatic.

Do I need to leave Wix if I only have a few large photos?

Try fixing the photos first. Many “Wix is slow” complaints are camera originals. If the page is fine after compression, stay. Leave when the remaining weight is the platform, or when the editor has become the expensive part.

Can a speed app fix a slow Wix site?

Treat that claim with suspicion. You cannot app your way out of a heavy framework and a stack of other apps. Remove weight. Do not add another script that promises to remove weight.

If you have hit the ceiling and want the site rebuilt lean, that is ordinary work for us. The Wix alternative page is the straight comparison. Bring the live URL. We will look at it like a customer would.
