How to Move Off Wix Without Losing Your Google Ranking

You can leave Wix without losing your Google ranking if you keep the content that works, match old page addresses on the new site or redirect them properly, and keep your business details consistent. Rankings drop after a move for one main reason: old addresses suddenly lead nowhere and Google loses track of pages it had ranked. Handle the addresses and your position should hold. It often improves later, because you are usually moving to a faster, cleaner site.

Wix will not hand you a portable website. You rebuild. That is the job. The ranking work is the map, not the new fonts.

Why is a Wix move different from leaving another builder?

The search rules are the same on every platform: Google cares about URLs, content and whether old links still resolve. The Wix-specific mess is how those URLs were created.

Wix sites collect extra paths you stop seeing: a free something.wixsite.com preview that still gets indexed, language folders, product or booking pages an app created, old slugs renamed without a redirect. Wix does not export a site you can park on your own hosting. You take words, images and a list of URLs. Someone builds the new pages. Then you 301 the old list.

That is why a Wix move is a migration, not a theme swap. The move from Wix page is the service version. This post is the checklist.

Ruby’s Bakery in Burgess Hill came off a slow Wix site. Sindall in Haywards Heath needed more than one sluggish Wix page. Oilfire Heating in Uckfield had already been through Wix and Squarespace. I will not invent how any of them ranked the week after. The map is what we spent time on.

What should you inventory on the old Wix site?

Do this before anyone opens a design file.

  • Click every menu, footer, sitemap and app page. Write down the full URL.
  • In Search Console, list pages that get impressions. Protect those.
  • Search site:yourdomain.co.uk for surprises: old campaigns, a duplicate home, a Wix system URL.
  • Check whether a wixsite.com preview still resolves. If it does, plan a redirect or a removal.
  • Save the copy that works and download your images. Confirm the domain is in your registrar account, not only “connected” inside Wix.

Skipping this is how a business deletes its best page because it was ugly. Ugly and ranking is still an asset.

How do Wix addresses usually break?

A few patterns show up again and again.

Slug changes with no redirect. You renamed /about to /about-us months ago. Google still has the old one. Map both.

App pages. Bookings, stores, events. If you do not move the function, those URLs still need a home: the new booking page, contact, or an honest “book by phone” page.

Language or duplicate paths. Redirect the ones Search Console shows. Do not spend a week on ghosts.

The preview host. Free Wix subdomains linger in other people’s links. 301 that host to the real domain if you still control it.

Trailing slashes and www. Pick one shape. Redirect the rest.

Keep paths the same where you can. Every change is a redirect you must not forget.

What about content Wix will not export cleanly?

Assume you are rewriting the HTML, not copying a file. Bring the words that already win an enquiry, photos of real jobs, testimonials, hours, areas covered and the boring facts. Leave chat widgets, pop-ups and sections you added because the editor made adding easy.

A rebuild is a chance to get thinner, not to throw away “electrician in Hassocks” for a vague slogan. Keep the facts. Lose the clutter. If you have a Wix blog, inventory it, carry the posts that earn, and 301 the slugs. Do not assume you “never used the blog” until Search Console agrees.

How do you launch without a ranking dip?

Sequence matters.

Build the new site on a staging URL. Finish the redirect map, including Search Console surprises. Test on a phone. Then point the domain. Leave Wix live until DNS has settled and the 301s are proven. Click the old URLs the same day. Submit a fresh sitemap. Update the Business Profile if the website field changed. Keep name, address and phone identical.

A small wobble as Google recrawls is normal. A week of 404s on money pages is a missed map. The wider process is website migration in Sussex. Cancel Wix when the map is proven, not the morning you flipped DNS.

What mistakes tank a Wix migration?

No redirects. Changing every slug for a “cleaner” site. Binning good content. Forgetting Search Console. Leaving the wixsite.com copy indexed. Rewriting every earning page in the same week. Rushing.

If you are happy with 301s and Search Console, a small brochure site is a possible DIY. If those rankings buy jobs, have someone who has moved Wix sites handle the map. A Page Forge one-pager is £99 and £29 a month, or £299 a year. A multi-page Wix site with a long URL list is quoted. Life after Wix is on the Wix alternative page.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my Google ranking if I leave Wix?

Not if you migrate carefully. Keep useful content, match or redirect old addresses, and keep name, address and phone identical. Rankings drop when old links lead nowhere. Done properly, a move often holds and then improves on a faster site.

What is a redirect and why does it matter?

A redirect automatically sends anyone who hits an old address to its new home. It preserves the ranking and the inbound links you earned, and it stops customers landing on a dead page. Permanent (301) redirects are the standard for a platform move. They are the most important technical step.

How long before rankings settle after moving off Wix?

Usually a few weeks. A short wobble as Google recrawls is normal. A steady fall means something is wrong, most often a missing redirect or a money page that no longer says the same thing. Fix the map. Do not wait it out for a quarter.

Can I export my Wix site and just host it somewhere else?

Not in any useful sense. You can export content in bits. You cannot lift the running Wix site onto your own server. Plan a rebuild plus redirects. Anyone who says otherwise is selling a plugin, not a migration.

What happens to my Wix store or booking pages?

Each public URL needs a new home. If you still sell or take bookings, rebuild those pages and 301 the old paths. If you do not, redirect them to the closest honest page, usually contact or a services page. Do not leave them as 404s if they were indexed.

Do I need to change my domain when I leave Wix?

No. You should keep it. Connect it to the new host and leave the name customers already know. Changing domain and platform together stacks risk. Keep the registrar account in your name either way.

If you want the Wix site moved without gambling the ranking, that is a normal job for us. See move from Wix. Bring the live URL and Search Console if you have it. The map starts there.
