Is Wix Bad for SEO? An Honest Answer for Small Businesses

No, Wix is not bad for SEO. Modern Wix can rank, and you get editable titles and descriptions, a sitemap, HTTPS and mobile-friendly templates. The old line that “Wix cannot rank” is out of date. The limits are narrower and more boring: less control over speed and structure than a purpose-built site, and the fact that ranking still depends on the work you put in, not the logo on the invoice.

If you are on Wix and the site is set up properly, you do not need to panic-migrate for SEO alone. If you are choosing a platform, know that Wix is capable and not the most tunable.

Where did the “Wix is bad for SEO” story come from?

Years ago it was largely true. Early Wix sites were slow, hard for search engines to read, and light on controls. That reputation stuck. Forum posts from 2014 still get shared as news.

Wix closed most of that gap. A normal public Wix site is crawlable HTML. You can set a title and description, tidy slugs, and get a sitemap, HTTPS and a mobile layout. Judge the product in front of you, not a comment from the Flash era.

The sibling question is is Squarespace good for SEO. Same shape: crawl is fine, control is thinner than custom, your content and your Business Profile do the heavy lifting.

The fundamentals a small local business needs are there: editable titles and descriptions, slugs you can tidy, a sitemap, HTTPS, a mobile layout, and on-page prompts that stop the blank-title problem. Each page can target a real search, such as “Oil boiler service Uckfield”, not “Home”.

For many Mid Sussex searches that is enough platform. Google can read the page. Whether it says anything useful is on you. Wix will not block a complete Business Profile or a review habit. It also will not do those jobs.

Where can Wix still hold you back?

The limits are real. They are not the myth.

Speed. The builder and any apps add weight. You can compress images and delete widgets. You cannot uninstall Wix from Wix. Speed is one ranking and conversion factor. The practical causes are in why is my website slow. I will not invent Core Web Vitals for a generic “Wix site”. Test your URL.

Structure. You work inside Wix’s idea of pages and apps. Fine for a brochure. Awkward when you want clean service URLs, heading order that matches how people search, or structured data beyond the editor.

App sprawl. “Rank higher” apps are rarely the missing piece. Extra scripts can make the page worse.

You still do the SEO. Wix hands you fields. It does not write a useful first paragraph or chase reviews.

None of that means “Wix cannot rank”. A competitive phrase is easier on a lean page you fully control.

Does Wix speed affect SEO, or only how it feels?

Both.

Google uses page experience as one signal among many. Visitors use it as a gut check. A slow hero on a phone is a bounce. Local results are a tap contest.

Wix speed problems are usually camera-sized images, apps and animation, plus the platform baseline. Fix the first three before you blame SEO. If the page is still heavy after a clean-up, cost a move. Do not buy an SEO app.

I have rebuilt Wix sites for Ruby’s Bakery in Burgess Hill, Sindall in Haywards Heath and Oilfire Heating in Uckfield. I will not invent ranking charts. They wanted a faster, clearer page and to stop living in the editor. It was not “Wix made us invisible”.

What matters more than whether you use Wix?

For a local business, almost everything else.

  • Clear copy that names the service and the area in the first screen.
  • A complete, active Google Business Profile, with the same name, address and phone as the site.
  • Genuine reviews, arriving steadily, replied to.
  • A page that works one-handed on a phone, with a number you can tap.
  • Consistency across directories, so Google is not guessing which listing is you.

A well-kept Wix site beats a neglected custom one. Owners who say “Wix is killing my SEO” often have a title set to “Home”, a half-finished Profile, and three reviews from 2021. Do the list above before you change platforms. If those are already solid and the page is still slow or the structure is fighting you, a purpose-built site is a fair next step. That control, plus not being the webmaster, is what a Wix alternative is for.

Should you leave Wix just because of SEO?

Usually, no.

Stay if the site already names the work and the towns, loads acceptably on a phone, has real titles, and the Profile is working. Moving has a cost. Old URLs need redirects. There is no SEO prize for leaving a site that already works.

Plan to leave when the platform is the constraint: speed you cannot fix, URLs the editor will not allow, or a site that has become a second job. Leave with a URL map and 301s, not a new template and hope. A managed one-pager with us is £99 to set up and £29 a month, or £299 a year. That is a site and the care, not an SEO guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Wix website rank on Google?

Yes. Modern Wix gives you crawlable pages, editable titles and descriptions, a sitemap and HTTPS. Wix sites rank when the content is specific, the Business Profile is working and the page is usable on a phone. The old idea that Wix cannot rank is out of date.

Is Wix or a custom site better for SEO?

Both can rank. A purpose-built site gives you more control over speed, URLs and structured data, which helps when the search is competitive. For most local firms the deciding factor is the SEO work, not the vendor. A well-optimised Wix site beats a neglected custom one.

Why is my Wix site not ranking?

Usually it is not the platform. Common causes are an incomplete Business Profile, few reviews, thin copy that never names the town, default titles, or a slow phone page. Fix those before you change builders. If those are already solid and the page is still heavy, then a move is worth costing.

Does Google treat Wix as a second-class platform?

Not in any way you should worry about. Google ranks pages, not website builders. A slow, vague Wix page will lose. A clear Wix page can win a local tap. Judge the page you published.

Will I lose rankings if I leave Wix?

Not if you migrate with a URL map and redirects, keep the useful content, and keep name, address and phone identical. Rankings fall when old addresses lead nowhere. Done well, a faster site often holds and then improves. That is a process, not a leap.

Should I install a Wix SEO app?

Almost never as the first move. Fill in titles, write the page, finish the Profile, and cut weight. An extra app is more code. It is rarely the missing ranking switch.

If you want the SEO work done on a faster site you do not have to edit, that is a normal conversation. See the Wix alternative or pricing. I will not tell you Wix is poison. I will tell you if it is the bottleneck.
